Wikimedia Foundation projects are multilingual, with wikis in hundreds of languages being actively worked on and plenty more ready to go. This Wikimedia Embassy is a central place for resources to help with cross-language issues — site-wide policy and software decisions that affect all of us and interlanguage linking. The Malayalam Source embassy has been started for communication between Malayalam WikiSource, and other Wikimedia wikis in other languages.

Universal Language Selector to replace Narayam and WebFonts extensions

On June 11, 2013, the Universal Language Selector (ULS) will replace the features of Mediawiki extensions Narayam and WebFonts. The ULS provides a flexible way of configuring and delivering language settings like interface language, fonts, and input methods (keyboard mappings).

Global AbuseFilter

Hello,

AbuseFilter is a MediaWiki extension used to detect likely abusive behavior patterns, like pattern vandalism and spam. In 2013, Global AbuseFilters were enabled on a limited set of wikis including Meta-Wiki, MediaWiki.org, Wikispecies and (in early 2014) all the "small wikis". Recently, global abuse filters were enabled on "medium sized wikis" as well. These filters are currently managed by stewards on Meta-Wiki and have shown to be very effective in preventing mass spam attacks across Wikimedia projects. However, there is currently no policy on how the global AbuseFilters will be managed although there are proposals. There is an ongoing request for comment on policy governing the use of the global AbuseFilters. In the meantime, specific wikis can opt out of using the global AbuseFilter. Integration of wsexport tool

wsexport is a very nice tool to download books from wikisource into many formats such as mobi, pdf, epub. so the content from wikisource can be read in a variety of devices. The tool can be seen here. Every month hundreds of books are downloaded throught this tool in Indian language wikisources such as Tamil, Bengali and Telugu. The statistics can be here. Being the biggest wikisource in Indian language by number of pages, Malayalam wikisource is still yet to catch up with wsexport tool. I would be happy if Malayalam wikisource adds support for wsexport and integrates it into the site.

Addition of mlWS to global bots

Above I have added a bot request, as this wiki is not within the global bot project, per list m:Special:WikiSets/2. Would the community consider opting in to the global bots, so that when we have Wikisource-wide fixes for mw:Extension:ProofreadPage that is possible to organise the bots to do the jobs within Phabricator, and simply get the fix in place. Wikimedia Foundation Community Board seats: Call for feedback meeting

The Wikimedia Foundation Board of Trustees is organizing a call for feedback about community selection processes[1] between February 1 and March 14. While the Wikimedia Foundation and the movement have grown about five times in the past ten years, the Board’s structure and processes have remained basically the same. As the Board is designed today, we have a problem of capacity, performance, and lack of representation of the movement’s diversity. Direct elections tend to favor candidates from the leading language communities, regardless of how relevant their skills and experience might be in serving as a Board member, or contributing to the ability of the Board to perform its specific responsibilities. It is also a fact that the current processes have favored volunteers from North America and Western Europe. As a matter of fact, there had only been one member who served on the Board, from South Asia, in more than fifteen years of history.

In the upcoming months, we need to renew three community seats and appoint three more community members in the new seats. This call for feedback is to see what processes can we all collaboratively design to promote and choose candidates that represent our movement and are prepared with the experience, skills, and insight to perform as trustees? In this regard, it would be good to have a community discussion to discuss the proposed ideas and share our thoughts, give feedback and contribute to the process.
